The Basics of Google Search and Online Boat Sales

Did you know that most people (84-88%) use Google to find local businesses and products?

When someone searches for a product or service on Google, the Search Engine Results Page (SERP) shows up. This page displays a list of results that Google's computers deem most relevant. These include websites, map business profiles, paid advertisements, knowledge panels, and images.

Research shows that nearly all people click on the top three map results and the top website results. See below for estimated percentages on where people click when they search:

In simple terms, the businesses that manage to be on the top of the map results and organic results get almost all the visitors.

The SERP plays a crucial role in boat shoppers' research and decision-making process. They typically search for boat brands, types, features, reviews, and local dealerships. While doing this, they interact with the SERP by clicking on organic links such as listing sites like Boat Trader, articles, manufacturer websites, review sites, and paid ads.

As you can see in the image above, the top three website results are boat listing sites (Boat Trader, YachtWorld, and boats.com). The top three Google Maps results will always be local dealerships or brokerages (Marine Connection, Lauderdale Marina, and Seven Seas Yacht Sales). Finally, in the ad results, we see a USA multi-location brokerage (Off The Hook Yachts) and an innovative boat sales company (Boateka) promoting their business in the Fort Lauderdale area.

We will discuss how to create successful ad campaigns in a future article.

Keep in mind that thousands of people conduct these searches every month. By effectively leveraging the SERP, boat companies can enhance their visibility and engage potential buyers right from the initial research phase.

The Boating Consumer Journey with Google's SGE

Google rolled out a new search experience with artificial intelligence (AI) called Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) on May 14th, 2024.

Google's SGE leverages AI to analyze all available search results and provide users with the most accurate and relevant overview of results.

When potential boat buyers search for information, they will now receive comprehensive answers summarized by AI using multiple authoritative internet sources. This streamlined experience means consumers can make informed decisions more quickly and with greater confidence.

See the image below for an example when searching for the most reliable boat brand:

Businesses can still appear on the search results page and attract traffic to their websites and inventory by being selected as one of the most relevant and authoritative sources for the user's specific search or by showing up on the top of the Google Maps results.

The new integration into the search engine landscape is poised to significantly impact the boating consumer journey. Understanding these changes and adapting digital marketing efforts is crucial to staying competitive.

Google's SGE Implications for Boat Sales & Marketing

Enhanced User Engagement

SGE engages users right on the SERP without needing to sift through multiple websites from the search results by delivering high-quality, research-based, AI-generated answers.

For boat shoppers, this means easy access to a compilation of detailed information, reviews, specifications, and comparisons.

Personalized Buying Experience

SGE also allows users to interact with and refine their searches by following up on their questions to get more specific answers or explore related ideas, just like ChatGPT.

This improves the buying experience by providing comprehensive, personalized answers to more detailed and complex questions, making it easier for consumers to find exactly what they need.

Adapting Your Dealership's Digital Marketing Efforts

Focus on High-Quality Content

Google's "helpful content system" rewards content that provides a satisfying experience for visitors. This means that dealerships must create high-quality, accurate, and comprehensive content that answers users' questions thoroughly and effectively. To improve your content:

  • Contextual Keywords: Use synonyms and related terms to cover a topic comprehensively. This helps AI understand the nuances and various aspects of the topic.
  • Authoritative Content: Link to credible sources to support your information, provide valuable resources, and build trust with well-researched content demonstrating expertise and reliability.

Implement Artificial Intelligence Optimization (AIO)

As SGE becomes more prominent, traditional search engine optimization (SEO) strategies must evolve into Artificial Intelligence Optimization (AIO). This involves optimizing content to be favored by AI algorithms. To optimize your content for AI:

  • Market Research: Analyzing search data and user behavior to understand what potential buyers are looking for in your area and how they search for it online. By understanding these trends, boat marketing professionals can tailor their content strategy to attract buyers online and satisfy their wants more effectively.
  • Clear Structure: Ensure your content is well-structured and easily digestible by both users and AI by using organized and coherent headings (H1, H2, H3, H4), concise paragraphs, and bullet points.
  • Structured Data: Think of structured data as adding labels to your content so that search engines can better understand the different parts of your website. These labels include product and business information, ratings, reviews, FAQs, and other elements that provide quick, helpful information to users. You can add these labels using a format called JSON-LD or a unique vocabulary called schema.org.

Leverage User-Generated Content

Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and share their experiences to boost your credibility and attract new buyers. AI algorithms highly value and trust user-generated content, which can improve your business's visibility in search results.

Enhance Listing Content & Strategy

Showcase comprehensive boat information to drive engagement and conversions, including features, performance, and reviews. Follow these best practices:

  • Revise Product Feeds: Ensure your product feeds are complete and up-to-date, including all relevant details such as titles, descriptions, reviews, specifications, prices, options, and availability. Regularly update your product feeds to reflect any changes and avoid misinformation.
  • Utilize Visual Content: Use high-quality, up-to-date images, videos, and interactive content like virtual tours to enhance user engagement. Boat buyers often rely on visual information to thoroughly explore the boat's interior and exterior before purchasing.
  • Leverage Google's Shopping Tab: Increase your inventory's visibility by creating a Google Merchant Center account and uploading your product feed. See the image below for reference:

Navigating the Boat Marketing Future with Google Search

Most people turn to Google when searching for local businesses and products. Being prominently featured in the SERP significantly boosts visibility and engagement.

With Google's SGE transforming the boating consumer journey, businesses must refine their digital marketing strategies to stay competitive.

Embrace these changes and leverage AI to ensure your business is differentiated from the rest and continues to thrive in an evolving digital landscape. This will allow you to provide a superior, personalized buying experience and drive more boat sales.
